To the editor,
I am writing in reply to your article which I read recently. There are arguments for and against:
For - it is evident that there are too many cars and new roads are always being built to make room for an ever growing number of vehicles. There are still many old cars on the road and it is they that cause the most pollution.
Against - cars play such an integral role in our way of life that it is difficult to see how we could get rid if them. Public transport is not good enough to replace them (especially in the country) and it is often expensive. Finally, modern cars pollute very little.
In my opinion, stricter tests are needed to control exhaust fumes and cars which pollute too much should be destroyed. I am sixteen and I am going to learn to drive soon - my parents are not rich and so I am not going to be able to have a new car; with stricter controls even a small cheap car would not pollute too much.
Yours sincerely,
Harry Davids
